Do You Know

The first movie was made way back in 1890s and its 21st Century today...phew a long journey!!! And this journey is marked by some unknown and unearthed facts and treasures of trivia. In this section FM attempts to unleash this treasure for our dear readers and give them a sneak peek into the beautiful history of our Bollywood.

R.K. Films

Raj Kapoor who is commonly revered as being ‘Showman of the Millennium', has been a trend setter of sorts in the Indian Film Industry! But why do we say so? Think, all movies have just one intermission? Well, then you think wrong!! Can you beat the fact that it was actually RK Banner's - Sangam and Mera Naam Joker which had two intervals! We don't know if that in anyway increased the pop corn sales, though! To fill you a little more..while Sangam was a blockbuster, Mera Naam Joker failed disastrously at the box office..oops!

Katrina Kaif

The gorgeous diva of B-Town, Sallu's support and Ayesha Shroff's Khoj - Katrina who created a bang in the film industry was first seen in the movie Boom, which was not all so explosive really! While most actresses endure a session under the knife before starting their careers...Katrina too went through something similar!...No...Shoo....not what you'll are thinking yaa!! Katrina got Turquotte chopped off from her full name and went on to replace it by Kaif! Duh...what all people do for the glam world!!

V.Shantaram

The conventional tag of ripping stories from Hollywood is a general accusation made on Bollywood, but do you know it was legendary V. Shantaram who shed the stereotype by supplementing inspiration to the West through his movies-  Do Aankhein Baarah Haath (1957) and Madhumati (1958). While the former conceived the theme for Hollywood flick Dirty Dozen; Madhumati popularized the theme of reincarnation which is experimented till date, much by the K-brigade of late..phew!

Rehana Sultana

If you think Old is just Gold...well-o-well..Old can also be very Bold! The price of which Rehana Sultana had to pay! While flesh-flash still raises a million eyebrows, do you know Rehana Sultana who mastered acting at the highly reputed FTII Institute was the first to strip down on screen in her debut film Chetna, directed by B.R. Ishara! The film created a frenzy since a topic as bold as this was never attempted on celluloid. This step bared her future in the film industry as she easily fell into a type cast which could not do justice with the seriousness of the role! Sad, it is!

Pyaasa

Who says movies of the bygone era are forgotten? Man of few words, the intense Guru Dutt was ranked 73 in 2002 by sight and sound critics' and director's poll of greatest film makers. Also the prestigious Time Magazine featured his movie Pyaasa (1957) in the 100 Best Movies List!

Chetan Anand

Cannes Film Festival..Aah..if this gets Aishwarya Rai to your mind or Nandita Das only...then let us tell you the association of Indian Film Industry with Cannes dates way back, right to the time it was first held. Chetan Anand's social realist film Neecha Nagar (1946) made its way into the Cannes for the Grand Prize, the very year Cannes Film Festival made its debut.

Dilip and Raj

Some fates are drawn parallel to each other unknowingly! And to support this who could be better than Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar! Dilip Kumar made his first major screen appearance in a film called Milan in 1947; Raj Kapoor played his first big role in Neel Kamal in 1946. Also, both have much in common, like- the two were born in the month of December in Peshawar. Dilip Kumar on December 11, 1923 while Raj Kapoor on December 14th just a year later. They both went to the same school, had same set of friends and eventually landed up in the same profession, and today they illuminate the Bollywood Industry as legends. We say Woah to the bizarre lock of destiny!

Nargis

At the tender of age of 4 when most kids are leapt on to their mothers, naïve and unaware of the world around them, Fatima Rashid, daughter of famous singer Jaddanbai and Uttam Chand Mohanchand- a doctor by profession, had their little one acting in the movie Talash-E-Haq!...Err..but who is this Fatima Rashid? No points for guessing! Nargis Dutt that girl was to be, as her fate unraveled in the coming years! She was born in Calcutta on June 1, 1929.

Ramanand and Manmohan

Did you know Ramanand Sagar who is much revered for his series of Ramayana on television, actually started off with his career as a writer in the movie Arzoo released in the year 1965 starring Rajendra Kumar, Feroz Khan and Sadhna; whereas Manmohan Desai made an entry into the film industry with the movie Rajkumar as a writer starring Shammi Kapoor and Sadhna.

Mughal - E - Azam

K. Asif's Mughal-E-Azam, the epitome of the royal Mughal period was to star Nargis for the role of Anarkali, Late Sapru played the part of Prince Salim and fiery Chandra Mohan were to play Akbar- The Great. However, when they'd shot about 10 reels, Chandramohan's sudden demise led to calling off the movie. Eventually this version of the film got scrapped and years later the film was resumed with an all new set of actors, who immortalized this epic movie!
